Welcome to Yacht Style’s first issue of 2021, which you can find in print, on Magzter and on www.yachtstyle.co (Flipbook version). The issue is spearheaded by our 19-page feature on the magazine’s annual list of Asia’s Yachting Leaders, who span from the UAE to Japan but ultimately focus on the magazine’s core regions of Greater China and Southeast Asia.

The leadership theme in this issue extends to not one but three Leader interviews including Hong Kong-based Lester Lam of Camper & Nicholsons and Thailand-based Vrit Yongsakul of Boat Lagoon Yachting and Burgess. Both again appear in our annual list of Asia’s Yachting Leaders.

Leader: Lester Lam, Chairman, Camper & Nicholsons Asia

Leader: Vrit Yongsakul, Group Managing Director, Boat Lagoon Yachting

Marco Valle, a regular visitor to Asia, is also interviewed. After 24 years with Azimut, Valle was promoted to CEO of the Azimut-Benetti Group, recently crowned the top-ranked builder of superyachts in the Global Order Book for the 21st successive year.

Marine Italia’s Paul Grange and Voyager’s Tommy Ho – who both feature in Asia’s Yachting Leaders – are among five Column contributors in this issue and both insist on the remarkable resilience of the Hong Kong yachting market through Covid. Sunreef’s Nicolas Lapp talks about green catamaran designs, Angelo Gobbi explains Absolute’s dedication to innovation, while Frank Coles highlights the plight of merchant mariners around the world unable to return home.

In addition, Yacht Style has started the new year by introducing a new section: Sustainability. The opening article looks at what leading motor yacht builders are doing to make their boats greener. Sustainability and environmental responsibility are critical, fast-evolving issues, so there’s a lot more to come on this topic.

Absolute is one of the motor yacht builders profiled in Sustainability and the Italian yard is launching its Coupé range featuring solar power this year. Meanwhile, in Hong Kong, Yacht Style profiles the owners of an Absolute 58 Fly, Stephen and Sharly Chun, who have used their boat more than ever since Covid restricted travel overseas.

Hong Kong is also home to the Asian premiere of the MCY 70 Skylounge, the model featured on this issue’s front cover. The first of the new Skylounge Collection by Monte Carlo Yachts, the model’s world premiere was held in Miami early last year and the first unit into Asia arrived in late 2020. The MCY 70 Skylounge is among this issue’s four Reviews of models either in Asia or set to arrive in the region, with the other three only unveiled in Europe late last year.

One of those, the Custom Line Navetta 30, was recently sold to Hong Kong and is expected to arrive in spring. The Navetta 30 is Custom Line’s first project with an exterior by Filippo Salvetti and interiors by the world-famous Antonio Citterio Patricia Viel (ACPV) architectural studio, both firms giving a special imprint to the brand’s new entry model while respecting and updating the line’s heritage.

Other models reviewed include Benetti’s new Oasis 40M, which has sold at least a dozen units globally including two to Asia, early affirmation of the work of British design studio RWD and New York-based Bonetti/Kozerski Architecture.

And then there’s the Prestige X70, the brand’s exciting new flagship. With no side decks on the main deck, this remarkable yacht features an extra-wide saloon, extra-long cockpit and fun-filled swim platform.

There are also encouraging signs of activity in many other markets. In December alone, Thailand hosted several three-day rendezvous-style events in and around Phuket, of which a couple are highlighted in the Events section, again surprisingly busy. Enjoy the read!

Events: The Blue List Expedition, powered by Yacht Sourcing Thailand.
