Jeanneau will debut its Sun Odyssey 380 at this year’s Southampton International Boat Show (September 10-19) on England’s south coast. The French builder will then show the new Sun Odyssey in both France and Spain as the sailing boat exhibits at Grand Pavois La Rochelle (September 28-October 3) and the Barcelona International Boat Show (October 12-17).
The yacht is the newest addition to the eighth generation of the Sun Odyssey range, which also includes the 440, 490 and most recently the 410.
Having designed the 410, Marc Lombard handled the naval architecture of the Sun Odyssey 380, which has an overall length of 38ft 6in with the integrated bowsprit and 36ft 9in without.
“Hull, appendages, sail plans, design and ergonomics, layouts, weight estimates … everything has been designed, down to the smallest details, to make her the best sailboat in her size category,” Lombard said.
A hard chine continues to the bow of the boat for a more powerful and stable hull, which includes an inverted bow for smooth entry into the water, better weight distribution and a distinctive look. A forefoot clear of the water ensures less wet surface area and greater speed. The yacht has an L-shaped keel, with an optional lifting keel offering the same performance as a deep keel.
There are twin rudders with self-aligning rudder bearings, while a tunnel-mounted bow thruster assists handling. Along with unencumbered side decks and comfortable coamings, the 380 features a lower boom to ease access to the sail and increase the sail area.
Piaton Bercault & Co designed the interior of the 380, having worked on the three other eighth-generation Sun Odyssey models.
Portside of the steps, the interior starts with an L-shaped galley while to starboard is a day head with shower. Forward is the lounge, with a C-shaped sofa and several options for the table and accompanying furniture, while another sofa is to starboard.
The owner’s cabin is in the bow and can feature either an en-suite bathroom and shower or a second cupboard. The aft section can feature either two double guest cabins or one guest cabin and a storage room as well as a spacious separate shower.
