Sunreef Yachts is building the first Sunreef 80 Eco Hydrogen for owners seeking to use it for “long cruises and exploring new cruising grounds”.

The sailing catamaran will combine high-tech hydrogen fuel cell (75kW), a hydrogeneration system, custom battery bank (440kWh), two 120kW electric motors and the builder’s unique solar skin (32kWp), already seen on the first two units of the 80 Eco and first 60 Eco.

“The yacht will be used for private cruises and exploration. She will often sail into less sunny areas of the world, which is why it was important for the owners to rely on hydrogen,” said Nicolas Lapp, Sunreef’s Chief Technical Officer and son of company founder Francis Lapp.

“The owner wanted an autonomous craft that won’t use any fuel. The idea is to be able to go far and rely on clean energy, even when there’s not enough sunlight to generate solar power. Hydrogen yachts are a very exciting and promising sector.”

The Sunreef 80 Eco Hydrogen will have six carbon tanks offering 55kg of compressed hydrogen (350bar), which will also be used to power both the appliances and the catamaran’s engines. Sunreef is developing a system to produce hydrogen from sea water, using solar power and hydro-generation.

The yacht is based on the hull and superstructure of the Sunreef 80, the most popular of the builder’s current range of sailing catamarans, which also include 50, 60 and 70 models. The 78ft 4in yacht has a beam of 37ft 10in, while the rig includes a 200sqm mainsail and 155sqm genoa.

“The Sunreef 80 is one of our bestsellers. One of the reasons for this is the amount of space she provides. Her beam translates into massive relaxation space on the flybridge, main deck and aft cockpit. At the same time, she offers a lot of room and flexibility within the hulls. There will also be one very important factor contributing to comfort – she will cruise in total silence.”

Francis Lapp, founder and CEO of Sunreef, added: “Our philosophy goes far beyond boat building. We craft experiences. Before we design a tangible object, we always take the time to think about the aura we want to create.

“The Sunreef 80 Eco Hydrogen delivers a message of respect and responsibility. She is the synonym of comfort and silence. At the same time, this yacht uses the latest technology, so she appeals to all those who like to look into the future.”

Sunreef’s current builds include the 43M Eco (click for article) and 100 Eco.
