Royal Phuket Marina has embarked on a US$300,000 investment to dredge 750m of the Koh Kaew Canal inner channel up to the marina’s entrance, allowing 24-hour access, even at low tide. Scheduled to be completed in October, at the start of Phuket’s high season, the project will create a 20m-wide inner-channel with a minimum depth of 2.5m.
Meanwhile, the Phuket Marine Department’s dredging of the area’s outer channel is slated to finish by September. Both projects will greatly increase accessibility, allowing boats up to 35m to safely enter and exit Royal Phuket Marina around the clock.
The upgrade runs alongside the marina’s ongoing investment in sustainability, which last year included installing solar panels on the roof of its four-storey dry-stack system. More solar panels have recently been installed that have quadrupled the previous solar-energy production.
Gulu Lalvani, founder and Chairman of Royal Phuket Marina, said: “This latest investment reinforces our commitment to our customers and to the betterment of the island’s overall marine infrastructure.
“We aim to attract additional yacht and boat owners to the island, who may have previously opted for other destinations, thereby benefiting the local economy with their tourism spend. It is part of our vision to make Phuket the yachting hub of Asia and a destination on par with any other marine destination in the world.”
