Faced with travel restrictions, superyacht charterers turned to destinations closer to home in 2020. Meanwhile, owners looking to buy a brand-new superyacht could consider a significant number of in-build yachts ready to buy, according to insights into market trends by global brokerage house Fraser.
In an exclusive Fraser Marketing Intelligence series for Yacht Style, Fraser CEO Raphael Sauleau said: “In terms of pre-owned yachts, demand for ownership has strengthened during 2020, outpacing the 11-year annual average by 26 per cent. For buyers looking for a new yacht, several yards are offering yachts already in build, meaning a shorter wait time.
Sauleau continued: “While ownership booms, charter has been more affected by travel restrictions and a lack of open destinations. Without long-haul options, charter clients turned closer to home.
“When Fraser invited charterers to rediscover local regions through our ‘Take a New Look…’ campaign, we saw a surge in demand among US clients for New England and for Europeans in Corsica, Italy and Croatia. The Bahamas and Florida hold significant interest for winter.
“Charter clients are as keen as ever to escape on the water. This year, 50 per cent of Fraser clients went ahead with their charters as planned and enjoyed the benefits of time away. Of the remaining 50 per cent, half of these postponed their charter to enjoy at a later date.”
