The flow of yachts between countries in Asia may have dwindled during the Covid era, but ONE°15 Marina Sentosa Cove in Singapore is now well positioned to accommodate resident and visiting superyachts following a S$7 million (US$5.2 million) upgrade that was completed earlier this year.
A major reconfiguration increased berths for 80ft-plus superyachts from 15 to 32, with all new and relocated superyacht berths now stern-to in front of the clubhouse. While the total berths remained at 272, the marina can now take yachts up to 67m (220ft) after dredging a new channel with a minimum depth of 4.5m at low tide.

Host of the Singapore Yacht Show from 2011 to 2019, ONE°15 Marina Sentosa Cove has more recently been recognised for its impressive overhaul. In late May, it was named International Marina of the Year 2021 by the Australia-based Marina Industries Association (MIA), the latest of its many awards and certificates.
Furthermore, the marina was recently at 97 per cent occupancy according to management, with the 167ft Feadship Double Haven among resident superyachts berthed in the prime position in front of the clubhouse.

“We decided to future-proof our marina by reconfiguring the berths to better service superyachts and yachts travelling through the region,” says Arthur Tay, Chairman and CEO of SUTL Enterprise, which owns the ONE°15 Marina brand.
“We strongly believe the demand for superyacht berths will increase in the region as the boating market in Singapore and Southeast Asia continues to mature. Another plus is that our clubhouse, restaurants, bars and other facilities now overlook a grand display of superyachts.”

Although the pandemic has dramatically reduced international travel for yachts, it has prompted a fresh surge of interest in yachting and charters in Singapore, although activity is dependent on group restrictions in the city-state.
When border and travel restrictions ease, Tay is confident superyacht traffic will quickly resume in Southeast Asia, where Singapore is well positioned as a link between the most popular cruising destinations including Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand.
ONE°15 Marina’s flagship Sentosa Cove facility is also among Singapore’s most convenient marinas, benefiting from becoming the country’s first private marina to have a Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) facility two years ago.

“Singapore is the safe haven of choice of the wealthy, so is emerging as the ‘Monaco of Asia’ and a natural hub for superyachts. The pandemic has accelerated the migration of wealthy tycoons to Singapore, with the number of single-family offices in the city doubling since the end of 2019,” Tay says.
“Pleasure boating is enjoying something of a renaissance due to this pandemic. Southeast Asia has many pristine cruising grounds and dive sites, so superyachts typically flock to this region, where Singapore acts as a safe, efficient hub for owners and crews to transit from.”
The upgraded marina includes new pontoons manufactured in France, while the state-of-the-art service pedestals made of marine-grade anodised aluminium and produced by UK-based Rolec Services. Other new features include a fuel-management mobile app, remote meter reading and automated billing services.

The infrastructure boost includes an increase in power from 2,000Amps to 3,000Amps, a 33 per cent increase in water pressure and a 30 per cent increase in Wi-Fi coverage, meaning boaters can now watch Netflix and YouTube without disruption!
Marina Director James Roy says: “With our additional larger berths and added services and facilities, we’ve positioned ourselves well to accommodate this ‘new normal’. Members have welcomed the new layout because boats now enjoy a more generous berthing space. Many yachts were previously in smaller berths that didn’t allow for easy manoeuvrability, even in light weather conditions.

“We’ve also upgraded our power, as consumption has been rising with the increasing size of yachts. It was a challenge when the marina was at full capacity and all yachts were plugged into their pedestals, but we no longer have this problem, which is great.”
The multi-million upgrade has been realised 14 years after the marina opened in 2007, since when it has established itself as the heart of yachting in the city and the hub of the leading luxury yacht dealers.

Marine Italia (Azimut), Hong Seh Marine (Ferretti Group), Asiamarine (Galeon, Bali) and Boat Lagoon Yachting (Princess, Jeanneau) have offices within the clubhouse, with other dealers based in the adjacent shopping precinct. Simpson Marine (Sanlorenzo, Bluegame, Fairline, Beneteau, Lagoon, Aquila), Asia’s largest yacht dealer, was a long-time tenant of the marina but last year moved to a nearby location beside the boardwalk restaurants facing the yachts.

The marina itself is flanked on two sides by a diverse selection of restaurants, luxury apartments and the W Singapore – Sentosa Cove hotel, which all provide a lively waterfront ambience as residents and visitors walk, jog and cycle along the surrounding boardwalks, day and night.
The marina itself has restaurants, bars, an infinity pool and a fitness centre, all with a view of the yachts, as well as a spa, tennis court, children’s playground and members’ lounge.

The facilities and attractive location have helped ONE°15 Marina prove a popular staycation venue during Covid, with its 26 hotel rooms enjoying strong demand.
The marina has offered special packages such as romantic spa getaways for couples and family packages including bicycle rental, board games and customised in-room dining menus, for when restaurants were closed due to restrictions.

Jonathan Sit, Acting General Manager, says: “The staycation market has been strong in Singapore and very competitive, so we tailored our offerings to suit the needs of our members and Singapore residents. However, we have an edge as we are in a tranquil area by the cove. Many members and guests choose our location to enjoy the peaceful marina view and waterfront living lifestyle.”
There will soon be much more for members and other boaters to enjoy as the Sentosa Cove site is located between two nearby ONE°15 Marina developments, one to the south in Indonesia and one to the north in Malaysia.

ONE°15 Marina Nirup Island in Indonesia is situated on a private island just 8nm south of Sentosa and is scheduled to open in 2023. Neighbouring a five-star resort featuring hotel rooms and villas managed by Accor’s M Gallery Hotel Collection, the marina will have 70 berths, a clubhouse and sea sports centre, plus fuelling and bunkering services.
In Malaysia, across the Johor Strait from northwest Singapore, ONE°15 Marina Puteri Harbour is an ongoing redevelopment of a former facility in the Iskandar Puteri waterfront.

Currently, there’s a 76-berth public marina and a ferry terminal with CIQ, and the development is twinned with the ONE°15 Estuari Sports Centre that opened in late 2020. In addition, an adjoining 207-berth private marina is scheduled to open in 2023 along with a clubhouse, hotel rooms, ballroom, restaurant, floating bar, conference and meeting rooms, spa and fitness centre.
“Due to the size of Singapore, there are relatively few local cruising grounds, so we want to introduce new cruising destinations to our members and boaters,” Sit says. “Yacht owners will have more destinations they can call home, enjoying member benefits, Five Gold Anchor marina facilities, experiencing the same level of hospitality and comfort at various destinations.

“By establishing additional marinas in region, managed by a familiar operator, we hope our members and boaters will enjoy greater confidence and convenience when traveling to and from different countries. Having more marinas will also give us added flexibility to organise leisure boating convoys over long weekends and holidays.”
Further abroad, ONE°15 Marina is also involved as a consultant for the Indonesia Navy Club project in Jakarta and two marinas in China, in Zhongshan near Hong Kong and Suzhou near Shanghai, and will manage them once construction is complete.
Within Singapore, the brand continues to champion sustainability efforts, particularly in marine conservation, with the Sentosa Cove marina earning Fish-Friendly and Clean Water certifications.

The marina has embarked on eco-friendly projects and initiatives including a Coral Garden project in collaboration with Tropical Marine Science Institute of NUS (National University of Singapore).
Other activities include ONE°15 Eco Day, an annual event dedicated to marina clean-up and educating members and the public about ocean conservation, while the marina has also played its part in this year’s Boaters Against Plastic clean-ups of nearby islands.

“We’ve always aimed to be ‘Asia’s Finest Marina’, but it would be wrong for us to assume we are the leaders of the marina industry in Asia.
