The Swan 120 is another German Frers design

Nautor’s Swan staged the world premiere of the Swan 120 at this year’s Monaco Yacht Show, where hull one, Audrey The First, was exhibited along with a Swan 98 at the world’s premier superyacht show. The 120 was built in Swan’s superyacht facility in Pietarsaari, Finland.

Argentine Germán Frers, the Argentine who has designed for Swan since 1981, handled the naval architecture for the 36.4m, 150GT yacht, while Genovese architect Misa Poggi designed the interiors.

With a typical Frers sheerline, the hull lines sweep gently aft from the vertical bow. From around the mid-point, the hull design carries almost all the maximum beam aft, increasing stability when heeled and creating generous volume below.

The 120 heads a Maxi line also featuring the 88, 98 and 108

At deck level, a clean foredeck leads aft to the coachroof, which blends into an expansive, protected cockpit area. The design conceals an electrically controlled bimini top and sprayhood, which is hidden in a flush coachroof cassette when not in use.

At anchor, the cockpit area transforms into a lounge space with versatile deck sofas that can convert into a dining area. Following other Maxi line designs, the Swan 120 also offers ‘aisle seats’.

CLEAN AFT DECK

Aft of the deck lounge is a clean deck space, still sheltered by the coamings, which runs behind the steering pedestals with ‘aero-seating’. Between the helming stations, it’s possible to incorporate a ‘snug-island’, which provides protected access to the aft accommodation with a dodger, sprayhood and seating for those on watch.

The voluminous stern features a transom that folds down hydraulically to form a teak-decked swim platform and reveal a spacious garage that can house a 4.5m tender and other toys. Once the tender is launched, the large area becomes available for watersports, sunbathing and even dining. Furthermore, a section of the aft deck may be opened to convert into a large sunbed at deck level.

The hull and deck are full carbon-fibre

The hull and deck are a full carbon-fibre construction, using epoxy Sprint® pre-preg carbon fibre interior and exterior skins on a core of M-grade Corecell foam. The pre-preg system provides structural stiffness and rigidity, and light weight.

INTERIOR COMFORT

The lower deck is accessed from deck via a 1.8m-wide companionway door constructed of curved glass to increase natural light below. The interior is offered in two principal layouts, with the full-beam owner’s suite aft or forward, both with the possibility of a walk-in wardrobe.

Both configurations also offer three en-suite guest cabins – one double and two twins – along with three twin crew cabins, also en-suite. The galley and laundry are close to the crew quarters.

The spacious saloon features a lounge area to port and dining to starboard. A new option features a large hull window adjacent to the daybeds, a soft-furnished space ideal while under sail or before nightfall. Audrey the First features fully custom interiors by Mark Whiteley Design.

Frers refers to the “modern canoe body of the hull”

SAILING OPTIONS

The Swan 120 comes with a comprehensive specification as standard, but there is an extensive list of options including three sail-plan configurations and a telescopic keel that reduces draught from 5.5m to 3.5m. The anchor is launched and retrieved by a hydraulic retracting and folding arm.

For those wishing to compete, there’s a comprehensive racing package that includes a square-top mainsail with running backstays; a double-length bowsprit with bobstay for fast reaching with powerful masthead gennakers and even the option to integrate a concealed anchor system.

Abundant deck stowage includes a spacious forward sail locker and two aft lazarettes, and there’s generous tankage for water and fuel, all easily inspected. Below the raised saloon is a full-beam engine room providing good access to the 450hp main engine, the two generators and other electrical and hydraulic systems.
